Is Dr. Mercola Really a Quack?
The FDA is responsible for overseeing products that account for one quarter of consumer spending in the US, including all prescription and over-the-counter medications, medical devices such as heart valves and stents, and your food and blood supply.
If you are like most people you likely believe that the FDA serves to protect the American public While that was true when the FDA was first formed over a century ago, today that is not at all the case.
What most people fail to understand is the sophisticated ploys that drug company giants are using to manipulate and deceive them from the truth. In fact this deception is frequently criminal as many drug companies were listed in the top 100 Corporate Criminal List.
Modern day multinational corporate influences have severely manipulated the FDA to the point where it is the fox guarding the henhouse. A large portion of its budget comes directly from the drug companies.
The drug companies simply don’t want you to know and understand that with simple and inexpensive lifestyle changes you can avoid expensive and dangerous drugs and surgery for the most part.
What they don’t want you to know is that the drugs that they spend $16 billion on every year to promote to physicians to prescribe to you, are responsible for prematurely killing hundreds of people every day in the US alone.
Let’s not forget the $4 billion dollars that they spend on direct to consumer advertising to convince you to take their drugs. You probably didn’t know that this form of drug advertising is illegal in every other country in the world except New Zealand.
I will go into more details later on but merely wanted to give you some of the highlights for the motivations drug companies are using to vilify people who seek to share the truth about you and your family’s health.
They are seeking to distract you when they call me, and others who share a similar philosophy, a quack who is a dangerous menace to the public.
My Credentials Speak for Themselves
To be a “quack” in the medical community is to be a charlatan or imposter. The word, which is said to date back to the 1600s, actually means “a pretender to medical skill,” or in other words, a person who pretends to be knowledgeable in the medical field.
So it’s time to set the record straight …
I always find it interesting that those who strongly disagree with my position refuse to associate a Dr. with my name and prefer just to use my last name or call me by my first name.
They chose to ignore that I am a fully licensed physician who can prescribe drugs and perform surgery, though I choose not to. You can view my current license to practice medicine below.
I am an osteopathic physician, also known as a DO. DOs are fully trained physicians who, along with MDs, are licensed to prescribe medication and perform surgery in all 50 states.
DOs and MDs have similar training requiring four years of medical school, after four years of college. We are trained in the basic and clinical sciences, and complete national licensing exams. Because there are far more MD training programs, many DOs do their postgraduate training in the same residency programs as MD graduates.
However osteopathic physicians practice a “whole person” approach to medicine, treating the entire person rather than just symptoms. Focusing on preventive health care, DOs help patients develop attitudes and lifestyles that don’t just fight illness, but help prevent it too.
I am also board-certified in family medicine and served as the chairman of the family medicine department at St. Alexius Medical Center for five years. I am trained in both traditional and natural medicine, and have been practicing natural medicine since 1990.
National Media Appearances and NY Times Best Selling Author
While appearing on the media is certainly no “proof” of medical authority, I have been extensively interviewed there for my insights on a variety of healthcare issues, I have been on national and local news, including:
- Today Show
- ABC’s World News Tonight (with Peter Jennings)
- Dr. Oz
- The Doctors TV Show
- CBS, NBC and ABC local news shows
- Time Magazine
- Forbes Magazine
- Dozens of nationally broadcast radio shows
I also have written two books that were NY Times best sellers.
I have seen more than 25,000 patients over the last two and a half decades, and have helped the vast majority recover their health when conventional medicine failed them.
Millions Rely on Mercola.com Every Month for Cutting Edge Health News
And, with over 1.5 million subscribers to this newsletter and about 20 million page views every day, Mercola.com is the fifth most visited health site in the world and is in the top 500 most visited US websites.
Millions of people rely every month on our site to provide them with cutting edge insights on how they can take control of their health without drugs or surgery.
Why I Sell Products on My Site
The most common criticism I receive is that I sell products on the site. This is often perceived to be a conflict of interest, so I want to directly address this concern.
Aside from my passion for helping people improve their health, one of my interests is technology.
I decided to merge my two passions when I created Mercola.com in 1997. On my site, I shared everything I had learned about health, such as exercise and dietary recommendations, and how to address emotional conflicts that are an underlying factor in nearly all disease.
I put everything I had learned on the site, I held nothing back and I charged nothing for it.
However, despite the fact that initially I was the only employee of the site. Eventually I had to hire people to help run the site as I had a full time job seeing patients in my medical practice.
Of course I didn’t draw a salary, but it cost me more than $500,000 to keep the site up and running for the first three years. It quickly became clear that I couldn’t continue that way much longer if I was to share this information with larger audiences.
A couple of obvious options were to start using paid advertising, or seek angel investors. Since I didn’t want to be handcuffed in anyway with limiting my ability to share my specific views of health truths I chose to not select this option. Also I didn’t want to be forced into endorsing anything I didn’t truly believe in.
My last option was to sell products that I personally used and could enthusiastically endorse. I only sell items that I myself use personally or would recommend to my friends or family members. This would generate revenues that would allow me to pay for the servers, bandwidth and all the staff necessary to maintain integrity and not compromise my principles.
If you search the site store you will find that I actually sell relatively few products, certainly far less than the range of supplements you would find at any health food store.
Most people do not realize that for each and every product I sell, I, together with my research team, have rejected hundreds of other similar products, literally. Each one is carefully vetted and tested, and oftentimes the research can take years, to make sure it’s the best on the market.
Why I Received Two Warning Letters from the FDA
You might also be reading this page because someone told you or you read on the web that I received two warning letters from the FDA.
This is really the only objective “dirt” that has been leveled against me.
First of all those warning letters occurred a number of years ago, in 2005 and 2006 and nothing has been written since.
But before I go into details about the warnings I received back then, I want you to understand why the FDA issues these types of letters in the first place.
Let me assure you that it is NOT to protect your health. The FDA has long ago abandoned that role. If you are interested in more details you can sign up for my free report which fully exposes how they have perverted their responsibility of protecting you to partnering with the drug companies to increase their profits.
The short summary is that they are serving as shills for the drug companies which made it illegal to make any claim, no matter how true it is or how many studies have been done, unless they “approve” it.
The letters I received were for “claims” I made on a product I was selling which was true but not permitted under the FDA’s rules. Opponents like to emphasize that this was “Illegal” and while that is technically true, no one was hurt or harmed and there were no lies, fraud or deception involved.
What I did do was violate a law made by the FDA, and initiated by the drug companies that makes it illegal for supplements to contain health claims. This “law” was lobbied for by the drug company to help eliminate the competition to their lucrative drug market.
Interestingly, this is the same type of warning that Dr. Andrew Weil, another very prominent natural medicine pioneer, was issued in October of 2009 but because he does not take as strong an anti-drug company position as I do there has not been much said about that.
Drug Companies are Fined Hundreds of Millions of Dollars
While it is true I received two warning letters, what you may not be aware of is that drug companies collectively receive thousands of warnings.
But it doesn’t stop there, they are actually fined hundreds of millions of dollars.
This is an absolutely astounding fact that most people simply fail to realize. They are fined because they committed crimes. Typically they are caught red handed in deceptive acts and have committed outright fraud in their marketing.
Lies and fraud are one thing but when those lies actually KILL people that is another story completely.
Tens of Thousands Killed by Taking Drugs like Vioxx
It is tragic that so many people have to die prematurely as a result of the deception and greed of the drug companies but that is the sad reality.
You might remember Vioxx as the anti-inflammatory drug that was taken off the market in 2004 – BUT not before it killed 60,000 people. This was NO accident – the FDA and the manufacturer (Merck) knew this could happen but Merck collected billions of dollars in profit before it was finally taken off the market.
How can I say they knew?
Well five years BEFORE it was taken off the market, in 1999, I uncovered evidence and published it in my newsletter that people taking this drug were at a massively increased risk of dying from heart disease and stroke. I believe I was the first person to issue a public warning about this drug.
In 2005 the New England Journal of Medicine actually published a summary of the deceptive data.
Millions Sold Unnecessary Cholesterol Drugs
Tens of millions of Americans are taking cholesterol-lowering drugs—mostly statins—and some “experts” claim that many millions more should be taking them. Once you carefully review the evidence you will see the “science” supporting the tens of billions of dollars to put people on these drugs is seriously flawed.
Cholesterol lowering drugs are the poster child for how drug companies have been able to rig virtually the entire system to facilitate sales of their solution for a non- existent problem.
Now this may sound like a bold statement, so I’m not asking you to just believe me. I encourage you to do the research yourself or help speed up the process by listening to one of the very few unbiased researchers that is not funded by the drug companies.
Dr. Golomb is one of those rare commodities. She has earned an MD and a PhD and, is an associate professor of medicine, and associate professor of family and preventive medicine at the University of California at San Diego. But she is a rare commodity because she has integrity, and has not sold out to the drug companies while most other researchers have.
How Drug Companies Manipulate Physicians
Most people don’t understand the army of “drug reps” that drug companies use to manipulate your doctor into prescribing their drugs.
Unlike the door-to-door vendors of cosmetics and vacuum cleaners, drug reps do not sell their product directly to buyers. Consumers pay for prescription drugs, but physicians control access. Drug reps increase drug sales by influencing physicians, and they do so with finely titrated doses of friendship.
Drug reps are trained to be observant, personable, and helpful. They are typically very friendly and skilled conversationalists.
They provide your doctor with free drug samples and free gifts they can use around the office. Even though most physicians would deny it, these gifts create both expectation and obligation which invariably result in most physicians prescribing more of the drugs the reps are promoting.

Truth Takes Time Before It is Widely Accepted
I’m fond of quoting German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer , who made a very important observation about truth. He said all truths go through three phases:
- First it is ridiculed
- Then it is violently opposed
- Then widely accepted as self-evident
Currently, we are still in the first two stages of health truth, and I have my fair share of opponents who openly seek to discredit me and other natural health care professionals.
The good news is that the website is clearly making a difference.
In November 2009, readers of the web site, The Huffington Post, voted me as the “Ultimate Wellness Game Changer.” The Huffington Post describes me as an online natural healthcare evangelist; I would like to think of myself simply as a doctor who stands up for the truth, regardless if that truth aligns with popular opinion, or is bound to disturb the conventional medical establishment.
A good example of this is the H1N1 (swine flu) outbreak. I was interviewed together with former NIH (National Institutes of Health) director Dr. Bernadine Healy by CBS investigative reporter Sharyl Attkisson, and the three of us were in agreement that the government’s swine flu stance was exaggerated, and that the public deserved to know the truth about the status of the disease in the country.
Ultimately my mission is to catalyze a transformation of this fatally flawed system that is prematurely killing hundreds of thousands of people every year in the US alone and causing needless pain and suffering in millions of others.
My strategy is to provide you with the latest information and scientific studies that not only expose this current fraud, but more importantly provide you with simple practical and inexpensive natural options, so you and your family can take control of your health.
